The Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy investigates and develops models, strategies and instruments to support sustainable development on the local, national and international levels. The focus is on ecology and its interdependency with economy and society. Special emphasis is placed on analysing and supporting technological and social innovations that decouple prosperity and economic growth from the use of natural resources.
Sustainability research at the Wuppertal Institute is
- oriented on applicability in real life
- integrative and cross-sectional
- interdisciplinary and based on systems analysis
- oriented on long-term ecological developments
- based on teamwork across the classic scientific disciplines
- reliant on a network of partners in science, business and policy
- independent and committed.
In the projects, scientists with backgrounds in a wide range of disciplines join forces. This approach meshes well with the similarly interdisciplinary work on the study "Sustainable Germany in a Globalised World". Headed by Wolfgang Sachs, it involved all research groups of the institute as well as the Berlin office. During the elaboration of the study the editors initiated an intensive dialogue process.
